About Us

Who, What, When, Where, Why and How

Who we are

Who are our Fond du Lac Community Theatre members?  What kind of people are we?

We are a close-knit, fun-loving, hard-working, down-to-earth group of people who love theater.  Some of us tend to think of our members as our second family, and theater as our second home.  Others have a more casual relationship, and become involved when time permits, or when a particular production piques our interest.

Experience / Education:  Some of our members have taken some high school or college Theatre courses.  A couple of us have even majored or minored in Theatre.  But most of us have been taught by other members, and have learned from experience.  Mostly we learn by doing.

Occupations:  Community Theatre members come from all walks of life.  Some of our members are students, some are retired, but most of us are working.  We are businessmen, lawyers, salesmen, technicians, teachers - many different occupations are represented, both "white collar" and "blue collar."

Ages:  All ages are represented, ranging from young children, whom we value for their energy and enthusiasm, to Senior Citizens, whom we value for their experience and wisdom.

Diversity:  We understand the value of our diverse backgrounds.  This diversity is a great asset to our common avocation of working in theater, because it brings many different skills and points of view to our theater work.

What we do

Fond du Lac Community Theatre is the largest and most active theater group in the Fond du Lac area, and has been for over forty-nine years.  We produce at least four major shows every year.  Three of these shows comprise our regular season: our Fall, Winter, and Spring productions, for which we sell Season Tickets.  At least one of these is a major musical, usually our Winter show.

A children's group, the Once Upon A Time Players, is a part of FdLCT Through them we are also staging at least one children's play each year.  This is our Summer show, which is not included in our Season Tickets.

For the last couple of years, we have also staged a Christmas Show.

Our building is the former Ninth Street Fire Station.  It is used for most of our work: our meetings, rehearsals, office, set construction, props, costume work, library, general storage, etc.

Performance venues - However, as large as our building is, there is not enough space left for performance seating, so we do not perform there, except for our class projects and other very small shows.  Our shows are performed in different locations or venues.  The Fond du Lac area is fortunate to have a good variety of venues available.  Those locations are listed here in alphabetical order:

Why we do it - our Purpose

Mission Statement - Our mission is to advance the arts in the Fond du Lac area, including the theatre and its allied fields, and to provide its members with experience in all phases of live public dramatic entertainment; to provide the Fond du Lac area with performances in the dramatic arts.

Our goal is simple: to bring as much participatory, live theater to Fond du Lac as we can.  By "participatory" we mean that we don't hire outside groups to perform here.  We're a grass-roots,  hands-on, do-it-yourself group.  It would be a lot easier to just hire someone to come in and perform, but it wouldn't provide as many opportunities for the people in our own area.  And it wouldn't be as much fun!

"You don't have to be crazy to work here," the old saying goes, "but it helps!"  Our active members are unpaid volunteers.  So why do we do it?  The short answer is: "For the fun of it."

People who act in Community Theatre have discovered the joy of performing.  People who work behind the scenes have discovered the joy of expressing their creativity.  You don't have to be a Pablo Picasso or a Christian Dior to work in theater; you just have to be willing to pitch in and lend a hand, using whatever talents or abilities you may have.  There is a great thrill in seeing a show come together, and then hearing the audience's reactions.  Once you've experienced the satisfying feeling of accomplishment of knowing that  your talents have contributed to the success of a show, you'll probably want to do it again.

Whatever your talents are, you can find your joy, whatever that may be for you.  Explore our site.  Check out our Committees page.  Call or email a Committee Chairperson to look into the activities that you enjoy doing.  Chances are that you will at least find a good place to start.

If you'd rather just watch, that's fine, too.  After all, when the lights go up, it's our audiences who make it all worthwhile.

How we work - the methods to our "madness"

Each production is designed and built from the ground up by our own volunteers.  Here's the way it usually works:

bullet

The Proposal -- When a Director decides that he or she wants to direct a particular play, he or she puts together a rough proposal (a script, a tentative directing team, a budget, etc.) often with the help of a Board of Directors member or Officer.

bullet

The Pitch -- They propose it to the Board of Directors at one of our monthly Board meetings.

bullet

Selection -- From the choices proposed, the Board chooses which plays FdLCT will produce, so that we can present a balanced playbill for our next season.  Then each Director chosen goes to work:

bullet

Recruiting - The Director recruits his or her team of directors:
bullet

A Co-Director or an Assistant Director.  This must be someone who can take over in the event that the Director, for any reason, cannot continue.

bullet

Music  - a Vocal Director to direct the singers, and/or an Orchestra Director to direct the Pit Orchestra.

bullet

Backstage - a Technical Director,  a Stage Manager, a Set Designer, a Costume Designer, a Makeup person, a Props person, a Publicity Writer, etc.

bullet

Auditions - They hold open auditions, select the cast and recruit the rest of the crew.

bullet

For a musical, the Music Director recruits the Pit Orchestra, and they learn and rehearse the music.

bullet

The Stage Manager recruits and works with the Stage Crew.

bullet

The Costume Designer chooses, rents and, if necessary, alters or sews the costumes, recruiting assistants if necessary.

bullet

The Props person finds or builds the props.

bullet

The Set Designer designs the sets, and the Set Builders construct the sets.

bullet

The Technical Director  recruits the Tech Crew and designs the lighting, sound, special effects, etc.

bullet

The Make-up person recruits make-up assistants, and designs the make-up.

bullet

The Publicity person writes the press releases.

bullet

The House Manager recruits the ushers and takes care of the logistics at the venue.

bullet

The Tickets person orders the tickets and gets them to the place of sale (usually Wegner's), and then from there to the box office on performance nights.

Those who just want to watch comprise our main audiences, of course, but those who want to participate can actually help to create theater.  Both are always welcome.  There is a lot to do, so we have many opportunities for anyone to become involved.
