About the Play:   "The Fantasticks" may be taken on several levels.  The story is simple, a playful variation on the Romeo and Juliet theme, but the style of the show is quite sophisticated.  First, there is the conscious use of a variety of ancient theater techniques: the narrator "chorus" from early Greek theater, the platform stage and stock types from Commedia del Arte, the mute "prop man" from Chinese theater and the Elizabethan inspired use of poetry and "linguistic magic" to set the scenes and underscore the dramatic effects.  Second, there is the serious subtext beneath the comic surface, having to do with the seasonal celebrations upon which all theater is based.  And last, but most important of all, there is the score.  Melodious, humorous, at times sentimental, it manages, like the show itself, to be both simple and complex at the same time.  It is the very heart of "The Fantasticks."

History: Fond du Lac Community Theatre has presented this show once before, as our first musical in 1967.  We also presented "The Fantasticks" again in 2007, as part of our Fiftieth or Golden Anniversary Season.

"The Fantasticks" was produced through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
