The Hat Tradition Begins, a reminisce by Pete Runde

Talking about ‘Joseph,” there are two things that I can remember.  One was that Claudia Winland made a cap for me to wear, as Orchestra Director, with a gold pyramid on the top.  And I felt really foolish about doing that.  And so maybe the second night I put that on in the very last song and hoped nobody would notice.  But a lot of people thought it was cool, so by the end of the show I was wearing it all the time.  And I think we started a tradition that lasted maybe fifteen years, because I know Warren Larson also started wearing a cap when he would direct the high school plays.  Like I think they did ‘South Pacific’ and he’d wear a Navy Captain’s cap.  And I had caps for the rest of the ones that I directed as well.  Some were sort of outlandish.

The other ‘Joseph’ thing that I remember was that Warren Larson directed the vocal, and he had so many changes to the music that I spent fully a third of our rehearsal time telling the musicians what to change in their music, where to cut, where to change key and all of the alterations.  We spent seems as much time changing the music as we did actually playing it.  It was really, really involved.  But it was a great show.

Our Technicolor Dream -- a reminisce by John Silah

The show that seems to be the most universally acclaimed as the best musical that Fond du Lac Community Theatre has done is probably "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," which we staged in 1996.  Many people told us that it was as good as productions they had seen in Milwaukee and Chicago.

It was a joyful play, with show-stopping, Andrew Lloyd Webber music, fine performances, magnificent costumes – everything that makes a show great.  I had some adult volunteers to help with the lighting, and together we created some striking effects.

The "mega-mix" at the end had people clapping and dancing – even the “techies” were dancing at their technical stations.  One of our crew, Tom Lanari, was helping out with sound.  When one of our cords started to come loose, and threatened to ruin the music, Tom grabbed the connectors and held them together with his bare hand.  Despite the fact that the malfunction was causing a painful electrical charge to go through his arm, Tom held the connection together throughout the entire mega-mix.  I had my differences with Tom, but you can’t knock that kind of dedication.
