An Eye-Catching Show -- a Reminisce by John Silah
In 1995 FdLCT performed the hilarious comedy "Nunsense." It was so popular that they have since staged two of its three sequels, "Nunsense II, the Second Coming"
in 2000, and "Nuncrackers" in 2006.
During that original production, the actress who was originally to play “Sister Mary Amnesia,” the ventriloquist nun, had to drop out. The show’s Producer, Ann DeWilde, stepped in to take her place. Ann learned her lines and brought her performance up to speed. In fact, she did a fantastic job. It was a remarkable feat, but she was to surprise us even more.
One night, in the middle of a performance, my crew and I noticed something moving on the stage. One of the ventriloquist dummy’s “eyes” had popped out. It was apparently made out of a ping-pong ball, and it was bouncing
on the stage, heading toward the audience.
Visions of women screaming as an "eyeball" landed in their laps flashed before our eyes. But Ann never missed a beat. She stepped forward, reached out, caught the eye in mid-air, and continued with her performance as if nothing had happened!
